"Pursue that flighty temptress, adventure"
Prepare to be terrified: Meredith's inner thoughts, uncensored. So, in the mighty words of J.K. Rowling, "Let us step into the night, and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure."
7/30/2017 0 Comments Good EatsI was very lucky this summer to spend time in Nashville, Boston, New Mexico, Seattle, Vancouver, and Florida. And in all of these places, I tried some pretty spectacular food, but here are a few of my favorites. If you ever find yourself near one of these restaurants, I encourage you to check them out. MemphisBefore I talk about other cities' food, I have to start with the hometown. Early this summer, I made a trip to Maciel's, a great Mexican restaurant downtown that my mom and I discovered about a year and a half ago. They have delicous salsas that added flavor to your queso or their superb tacos (all of which you can spot in the picture on the left). Unfortunately, the roof fell in on Maciel's a few weeks ago, so it's under repair right now. But if you want to try some of the tastiest Mexican food in Memphis, you should check out their facebook page! I also discovered another food this summer in Memphis: falafel. I had been under the impression that falafel contained meat, and as a pescetarian this meant that I avoided eating it. However, when I found out that falafel really just chickpeas, I was delighted to discover a new food that I could eat (thank you Josie Campbell for clearing that up for me). It's so exciting to discover new foods that you like, especially if you can be as picky as I am. So far in Memphis I've enjoyed falafel from Casablanca and Ali Baba. Side note-if you're considering changing up your diet by cutting something (or multiple somethings) out, I'd say go for it! Even if you're picky you'll try a lot of new foods that you probably never would have tried, and some of them could become your favorite foods. Seattle
VancouverThe best food I had this summer was in Vancouver, at a tapas restaurant called Nightingale. Every single thing we ordered was incredible. The ceviche and the watermelon salad are pictured below. My favorite dish was the ceviche, which mainly consisted of pacific and radishes, but had an added crunch from quinoa that had been roasted. It was so good that my mouth starts watering justing thinking about it. My brother's favorite dish was the brussel sprouts, and my dad's was the rigatoni with octupus. My mom's favorite dish was the fresh oysters, and she was kind enough to let me try one. I had only tried raw oysters once before, and even though it was several years ago I have a vague memory of spitting the oyster out into a napkin. However this oyster was so amazing that I immediately asked for another, and I once again experienced the delight of discovering a new favorite food. If you're curious about some of the other dishes, I've attached the link to the full menu here. I also had the chance to try some fresh sushi, some of it better than others. The sushi below came from a stall at the Granville Island Farmer's Market, and it wasn't any better than the sushi I usually eat from Kroger. But later in the week, we ordered sushi take out from Tsuki Sushi Bar, and it was delicious. I've never been the biggest fan of nigiri because there's usually too much rice and it takes away from the fish's flavor. But I accidentally ordered like four extra tuna nigiri, and it was a very happy accident because they got the fish to rice ratio just right. My dad ordered the dynamite roll, and it was large enough that he allowed my brother and me to have a few bites and it was great. If you want to see more of the menu, click here. Well that's it, thanks for sticking with me!
